The Importance Of Pedagogic Competency For Non-Educational Lecturers
Abstract
The educational backgrounds of higher education lecturers have become increasingly varied. Many lecturers from non-educational fields are now entering academia without formal training in pedagogy. This study aims to identify and describe the importance of pedagogic competency for lecturers with non-educational backgrounds in universities in Banyumas Regency and explore the efforts made to enhance their teaching skills. This descriptive qualitative research used 12 respondents who were determined by purposive sampling. Researchers conducted observations and interviews with lecturers with non-educational backgrounds at three universities in Banyumas Regency. Findings indicate that pedagogic competency is crucial for non-educational lecturers as it significantly impacts the quality of higher education learning. This competence enables lecturers to create engaging lessons, develop effective teaching strategies, design curriculum that suits the needs of students, and improve their professional capabilities. Universities generally provide primary skills teaching and instructional techniques programs when lecturers start actively teaching. Additionally, lecturers improve their pedagogical competence through self-study, workshops, discussions with peers, and the application of various learning strategies and methods.
