Abstract
One of the factors that influence the success of a business is the capital of the business. Thus,
the role of government and private institution in providing this need is very essential. It can be
in the form of a credit loan by financial institution, commercial bank, government bank or
rural bank. The role of rural bank as a creditor has shown a good performance. This article
will discuss the role of rural bank in supporting the Small and Medium Enterprise sector in
Indonesia.
The total credit which was distributed by rural bank until October 2011 was 40,26 trillion.
This value was increasing 20,96% comparing to the previous year, 33 trillion rupiah. Most of
those credit was productive credit of micro unit, small and medium enterprise. However, those
credit was considered small because it was less than 5% from the total credit of national
banking industry. The portion of debitor s’ credit account was 23% from the national
debitors’credit account. The total assets grew significantly that year until 20,56%. Based on
the data, the prospect of rural bank in increasing the role of small and medium enterprise is
widely open. Bank of Indonesia should encourage the role of rural bank through conducive
regulation, so the rural bank can give big contribution in increasing the Small and Medium
Enterprise. Hopefully, the grow of rural bank can be a good news for the development of
Small and Medium Enterprise sector which can increase the revenue and the welfare of
middle to low level of economic agents.
