Abstract

Small-medium scaled Industries (IKM) is one of the economic boosters in Indonesia. Based on Ministry of Industry of Republic of Indonesia in 2013, The number of IKM in Indonesia are 3,9 million units (75% of them concentrated in Java). Nevertheless, most of the IKM in Indonesia do not have competitiveness in global level. One the other hand, the Government of Indonesia has promoted development of the IKM activities based on innovation for the last few years. The problem is that the conducive climate to support the innovative-based IKM is not yet created in Indonesia. This paper aims to learn from practices of the small industries in Indian software cluster, exactly in Bangalore City as a best-practice for developing Indonesia’s IKM. The cluster mainly has two significant strategies to develop, including innovation and utilization of the social network. Both strategies are divided into four ways i.e. 1) individual technical skills, 2) business models and strategies, 3) technology and innovation capability, and 4) marketing skills. Those strategies have proved that the small industries play the pivotal role to develop the software industries in India. Moreover recently, India has become one of the leading software exporting countries in the world.
